| Meaning of the name Ramji: Lord Vishnu took the seventh avatar as Lord Ram to destroy the demon King Ravana. Ravana was very powerful and his tyranny knew no bounds. Also, boys born in the festival of Navratri to celebrate this occassion are usually named Ramji. Ramji was in the wholesale textile business in Babra before coming to Africa, and everyone who was given a licence to trade in Textiles was called a Charania, as there was an Indian currency called an Ania and the profit margin for a textile Wholesaler was set at one quarter of an ania, thus Charania. As it was the custom in British India to have your profession listed after your surname, Ramji Jivraj Charania thus became the name of this member of the family. Ramji came to Kenya in 1916, presumed to be in his thirties, and settled in Kisii; where he bought and sold Agricultural produce as well as selling Agricultural tools and supplying seed. He died in his seventies after having suffered from diabetes for many years,( even had his left leg amputated below his knee). |
